The Stimpmeter

... was named after the American amateur golfer, Edward S. Stimpson, Sr. (1904–85). While spectating at the 1935 US Open at Oakmont, near Pittsburgh, Stimpson saw a putt by the top professional Gene Sarazen (a two–time champion) roll off a green. He was convinced that the greens were unreasonably fast, and in order to prove it he developed a device that consists of an angled track (made of wood) that releases a ball at a known velocity. The speed of the green is derived by measuring the distance that the ball rolls on the surface of the green.
